Why trainees lose marks in data gathering

One thing

I’ve noticed over and over again with GP trainees preparing for the SCA is this:

They’re not failing because they don’t know enough medicine.

They’re losing marks because of how they gather information.

I’ve sat through many consultations where the knowledge is clearly there… but the consultation just doesn’t land.

Where it tends to go wrong

A lot of trainees fall into “checklist mode”.

You can almost hear it:

Symptom questions ✔️

Red flags ✔️

ICE ✔️

But it doesn’t feel like a conversation. It feels like a script.

And examiners can tell.

Another big one is missing the patient’s perspective.

You understand the headache… but not the fear behind it.

You manage the cough… but miss what the patient was actually hoping for.

That’s where marks quietly disappear.

Then there’s structure.

Some consultations just drift. You get bits of everything, but no clear sense that the doctor really understands:

●What the problem is

●Who the patient is

●What this means to them

And finally—depth.

Getting an answer isn’t enough.

You need to explore just that little bit further.

What makes the difference

The trainees who do well don’t necessarily ask more questions.

They’re just more intentional.

In their head, they’re constantly checking:

●Do I really understand the problem?

●Do I understand this person’s life and context?

●Do I know what they’re worried about or expecting?

●Have I joined everything together?

And because of that, their consultations feel natural, not forced.

Where Prosomio comes in

This is exactly why I built Prosomio.

Most trainees revise knowledge—but don’t practise consultations properly.

Prosomio gives you a space to actually practise:

●Running full consultations

●Seeing where you lose marks

●Improving your flow and questioning style

Not guessing. Not hoping.

But actually seeing your gaps and fixing them.

If you’ve ever finished a practice case and thought,

“I think that went okay…”

Prosomio helps you turn that into:

“I know exactly what I need to improve.”

At the end of the day, data gathering isn’t about asking more.

It’s about asking better—and making it feel like a real conversation.

And that only comes with the right kind of practice.
